Now that the thrifting craze is sweeping the country, you’d better be on your toes if you want to load your trunk with hidden treasures! You’ve gotta know where to shop and what places are worth your time. That’s where we come in. We’re happy to share our very favorite stores with you!
Luckily, we’re in Florida, which is a bargain hunting mecca.
Vero Beach, on the Treasure Coast, hosts some remarkable thrift shops, each location with unique finds. Put some gas in the car, pack a snack and get ready for a fun day of thrifting!
The Vibe: Upscale, boutique style, merch displayed well, easy to shop
The Finds: Set of Fitz and Floyd plates, pair of rattan chairs, colorful silk designer scarf, vintage floral curtains (I use the fabric to make large throw pillows!)
It’s no secret that sunny Florida attracts retirees from around the world and as people downsize their homes the thrift stores get more merchandise. This Goodwill is the go-to thrift shop for donating unwanted items in Vero. There’s a constant stream of diverse merchandise coming in throughout the day and furniture trucks drop off twice weekly. A seasoned thrifter can always find something good in this place. Word to the wise: don’t skip out on the bins above the racks of clothes, those items often get overlooked. I once found a vintage Liberty floral handkerchief, still in it’s packaging. There’s a huge selection of clothing and furniture. Open on Sundays and weekdays, the lights are on until 8 pm for you after-dinner thrift shoppers!
The Vibe: Clean clothing merchandised by colors (I love when they do that), friendly staff and dressing rooms (to avoid the sideways looks you get while trying on an evening gown over your clothes….always a plus!)
The Finds: Brighton-Style rattan chair, faux coral statement necklace, cabbage leaf pottery from Portugal, vintage caned settee
Tons of clothing and accessories and a great selection of furniture and lamps. Love, love, love their HALF PRICE OFF on all clothing sale every Monday! (Question: Should you spend half as much or buy double the merch?) Open from 9 am to 7 pm for the die-hard thrifter!
The Vibe: Friendly, helpful staff, large store, dressing rooms, constant donations
The Finds: Pair of Asian-style antique chairs, Chic John Stuart chests, wicker island style chair, decorator lamps
Indian River Habitat for Humanity Thrift Re-Store (Driving north approx 10 minutes on US Hwy 1)
Huge warehouse-style store with loads of furniture, lamps, artwork, electronics, household items, washer, dryers and salvaged building materials. Make sure you take your best furniture-hauling vehicle or you’ll regret it!
Vibe: Clean, friendly staff, merch well displayed, easy to shop
Sightings: Herman Miller mid-century desk, bamboo chandelier, designer sofas
Findings: Ming-Style Baker coffee table, glass top brass table, set of vintage wheat sheath tables, Glam decorator mirror
Celebrate all the loot you thrifted by taking yourself out to lunch! Use that extra money you saved (thanks $10 pair of Gucci boots...) and buy a fancy coffee for a mid-day fuel up. Treat your bestie to one of their delicious desserts.
Vibe: This café is a true gem with a great staff. It’s in downtown Vero and offers homemade breads, soups and sandwiches. Oh! And I always get a coconut macaroon (or 3) to go for the car ride home. You won’t be disappointed! Cheers!

Family, friends, food and fashion, the holiday season is my favorite time of year. Inevitably, however, during the hustle and bustle, we all are surprised with a last-minute party invite--or maybe we forgot to put it on the calendar--leaving us standing in front of the closet incapacitated by outfit paralysis. Take a deep breath, keep calm and go thrifting! In less than an hour I put together this festive outfit from my local thrift shop and got change back from a $20.
Here's what I thrifted-
Black fitted self tie tuxedo jacket $4.00
Ann Taylor strapless little black dress $3.50
Black velvet strappy heels by Charles Jourdan: $3.99
Beaded black and gold iridescent dangly earrings: $2.00
Vintage snap closure black handbag with goldtone handle: $5.00
Thriftfabulous! Time for a glass of champagne!

2. Persistence pays. Sometimes I go to the same Goodwill three times in one day. Why, you ask?
Between drop-offs at the backdoor and donation trucks constantly on the road, the merch changes every hour on the hour--you won’t see that rate of turnover at Neiman's or Saks! The revolving, ever changing inventory guarantees a cool fashion score for the patient but persistent thrifter.
3. Social Responsibility. Sure, most thrift stores support worthwhile causes and we can all feel good about that, but thrift shopping is also a form of recycling. When you buy an item it keeps it out of our country’s overflowing landfills. It's a local and sustainable form of business and you're keeping it green in two ways—recycling and saving the green in your wallet!
4. The Reward. I love finding great gifts and clothing for family and friends for pennies on the dollar! Fresh items you won’t find at the local department store. Recently, I found my Mom an Etro Italian dress for $7 that retails for $1200. She wore it on her Match.com date to the ballet tonight in Palm Beach. She looked fabulous!
5. Challenges the brain; spurs creativity. When you're out in the wild of a thrift shop you get bombarded with such a huge variety of items. The patterns, colors, and designs get the creative juices flowing. You can make a list of specific items you're looking for or you can freestyle it like me. It's fun to mix and match and create your own fabulous look.
6. Entertaining and social. Thrift shopping is very entertaining and social and the volunteers have become my friends. It's akin to a cocktail party without the cocktails. The volunteers get more excited than I when I raise a treasure in triumph.
7. The dopamine rush. Thrift shoppers are always happy and beam with pride as they walk out the door with their cherished loot. Good vibes all day and every day in thrift shops!

Beguiling Burl
Pass out! We were lucky enough to find this beautiful burl cabinet in the local Goodwill! Burls have been highly prized by artists and designers for their unique grain patterns. The grains of the wood add rustic elegance to the furniture. The retro vibe and organic pattern of this piece will add warmth and style to any room of the home. Below are examples of how burl pieces can be super chic in any interior setting.
